There's nothing better than a continuous flow of pure creativity. I was once told that when an artist creates, its a sort of meditation, meaning that the artist him(her)self has little to do with process. He/she lets go of the effort involved and completely surrenders to what's being born. I felt this surrender today. Two posts ago, I mentioned that I am struggling on whether to abandon my project "The Last Day" in order to focus on what will become the third novel in the Eyes in Atlantis series (I'm looking for a better name for the series). After much thought and checking my ego, I decided to give in to temptation and change tracks to work on the new book. Now, I've been compiling ideas for this project ever since I finished its predecessor, The Deluge, last summer and I had an entire page of notes to work with in the beginning. I originally sat down to start writing the outline for the book, but part way into writing down ideas, the first line in the book came to me. So, as dramatically as I could, I ran with it and wrote the first three pages with little effort to my conscious mind. If only the rest of the book writing process could be so easy. But needless to say, I am very excited about this new book. The funny thing is, I missed the characters the most (well, the ones that have survived this far, anyway). It felt great to be with them once more and find out what they've been up to since the end of the last novel. By the way, the third novel (right now anyway...I'm not locking myself into anything) begins nearly five years after the conclusion of The Deluge. I figured our characters needed a sabbatical from crazy shit. I know I'm getting way ahead of you guys here, with the first novel having just been published, but in reality this is great timing. I'm hoping to publish The Deluge sometime in late summer 2012, and if everything goes right, this third book will be published the year after. So I'm giving myself a little over two years to write this one, which is about the time it took me to write the first two, respectively.
